DIY Initial With Buttons

This cute little project takes no time at all to throw together and can be made for just a few dollars, or even with items you have around the house.

If you remember my post about Nana's buttons and fabric that I scored, you'll know where all of these buttons came from. I purchased the cardboard J at Hobby Lobby for under $2, I believe.

I wanted to make a solid white initial so I pulled out all of the white buttons and divided them by size; small, medium and large.

Using my E-6000, I glued down the large buttons randomly. I gave them a few minutes to dry and started adding medium size buttons and then the small. Again, letting them dry in between. There is no right or wrong way to arrange your buttons. I found adding the larger ones first helps cover more of the cardboard.

If you don't feel like buying a premade initial, you can easier print a letter out, trace it onto a piece of cardboard (Hell, the cereal box would work), cut it out and use that. I plan on making another one, an L, and I'll probably end up using all different colors.

Note: I used the E-6000 because I noticed that regular Elmer's glue just wasn't holding the buttons as well as I wanted it to. Feel free to use the adhesive of your choice. You could even use fabric to cover your initial and then add buttons. Totally up to you!

Gearing Up

I have sadly been neglecting my little blog the past few weeks while gearing up for the upcoming holiday season. The good news is that I've gotten a crapload of stuff accomplished. Ordered boxes for my soaps, labels, new lip balm tubes, labeled said boxes, created holiday packs, researched arts & craft fairs, made about 100 coasters and managed to score some awesome Black Friday deals.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and stuffed themselves silly. I know I did!

A Thousand Words: Chicago

Chicago was so fun this weekend! I got there Friday afternoon and after hitting up Starbucks, Steph and I went to see The Rum Diary. Not quite what I expected but funny nonetheless.

Saturday night we took the train into the city to go to Steph's friends after wedding party. Beware of mixing alcohol and men with really nice beards!

We had planned on heading back into the city on Sunday but didn't get up until after 11am so I ended up roasting a chicken and we watched reruns of The Sing Off. It was a rainy day so this was the perfect remedy.

Steph and I got up super early (i.e., before 7am) and took the train in. Our first stop was the Field Museum. We got in free because Steph is a IL resident. Woo hoo free stuff! I loved the Egyptian exhibit (of course I would) and kept remarking on how "real" the animals looked. What I really meant was how "alive" they seemed. We ventured out to find the Buckingham Fountain (it was shut off) and find the Chicago Bean (we didn't) so we headed over to Navy Pier and snagged some dogs and beer at half price. And free chips. Yay free chips! Next time I visit we will definitely have to spend more than a day on the city cause there's way too much stuff to do in one day. All in all, it was great to visit again and hang out with my bestie :)

I'm escaping from Tennessee and heading up to Chicago this weekend to see one of my besties, Stephanie. I've only been to Chicago once, and that was 12 years ago. In December. Can't really see a whole lot when you're bundled up like an Eskimo. I'm really excited to be going. We're gonna check out Navy Pier and hit up the Field Museum.

Sunday Recap

It started out simple enough. I slept in, snuggled with the boys and spent a few hours drinking tea and perusing blogs. After that I dragged all of my December Daily stuff out and set to work on planning my foundation pages and just getting everything in order. I even modified some Thickers that I had (I'll be doing a post on that in the next couple of days.)

Enter Mom.

"Hey, wanna go fishing?"

And my afternoon of scrapping went out the window.

Just like that.

I did manage to catch 6 Largemouth and a Bluegill so I can't complain. Mom can; she only caught one.

So now dinner is in the oven and Once Upon A Time starts very soon.

All in all, it was a great weekend. Hope you all enjoyed yours as well :)

I found this on Pinterest and figured I'd give it a shot. Over the course of the summer I lost almost 30 pounds. Yeah, I know, go me. I still want to lose another 10-15 but mostly I just wanna tighten everything up. Today is Day 5 and let me tell you, I guess I never realized just how much jumping jacks will kick your ass. Sweet Jesus! My quads and glutes are a little sore. I get to rest today, then on to more jumping jacks and sit-ups. I'm still running on the treadmill every two or three days and randomly using the TotalGym. This is designed as a 60 day plan and I'll reveal Level 2 and Level 3 as I complete the previous. The December Daily: Let's Try This Again

It's stuff like this that really makes me miss home. Especially this time of year. I miss chilly mornings and crisp afternoons. Hot chocolate. Meals in the crock pot. Scarves and mittens. The smell of fallen leaves. Pumpkin coffee from Dunks. Football games. Fireplaces. Family get-togethers. I miss it all.

DIY Resin Candle Holder

This week's DIY is a make it yourself resin candle holder. You don't have to stick with the cylindrical shape that I've used. The square and bowl shaped holders would work just as well. The best thing about this project is that it takes no time at all to make and you only need a few supplies.

Supplies:

2 glass containers (one small enough to nest in the other)

E-6000 or any other strong glue

Resin (I ended up using about 12oz.)

Any type of filler

Remember, you want your filler to be light enough in color for the candle to show through. I'm using the Agate I collected this summer in Alaska. Glass drops would work as well and they come in a wide variety of colors. I plan on making one with sea glass once I manage to find enough.

The first thing I did was adhere the smaller glass inside the larger one using a good size dollop of the E-6000. Make sure it's centered, press firmly and wait a few minutes to it to take hold.

This gives me about 3/4" - 1" of space on all sides.

Slowly start adding your filler. I covered the center with my hand to prevent rocks from falling into the smaller glass.

It's not quite up to the top but I'm all out of Agate. And I'm ok with that :)

Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect!

I chose to use a paper cup to mix the resin not only because I can just throw it away when I'm done but I can also squeeze the top sides together to get a more direct pour.

Once your resin is mixed slowly start to pour the resin over your filled between the two glass containers. Don't worry if you end up getting some on the glass. Just make sure you wipe it off with a paper towel when you get done pouring.

It takes a while for the resin to make its way down to the bottom. I actually ended up doing 4 small pours with about 5 minutes between each.

The resin will eventually settle at the bottom. I kinda like the look of the Agate that the resin has passed through.

And the finished product. Place your container somewhere it won't get knocked over and let sit 24 hours to harden. You can drop in a tea light candle (or larger, depending on your container)

I can't wait to see how this looks in the dark. I'll try to take some photos tonight.

Getting Pinched By Bears

This summer I was lucky to have my day off fall on July 4th. It was a slower week for us and I was able to fly out with the guys to Brooks River. If you've ever seen any photos of bears near a waterfall, more than likely, they were taken here.

First time visitors have to watch a 10 minute bear safety video (don't feed them, don't approach them, they don't like hugs or kisses. etc.) They give you a nifty little lapel pin (photo coming soon) and then you're off on your own.

Since I wasn't fishing or involved in taking photos for the website, I was stuck on bear duty. So, every three or four minutes (sometimes in lesser intervals) I would say, 'Incoming. Three o'clock.' And one of these guys would show up. (See above)

While these guys, Todd & Ryan, were busy documenting.

It was a little unnerving at first because there was a lot of tall grass but after awhile I sort of got used to having them around.

Doesn't he look cute? Yeah, looks can be deceiving. Later on, this clever boy decided we were a little too close for comfort and decided to charge us. Well, more specifically Todd, but since we were all standing together, we all got the full effect.

This big boy had perched himself on the falls and was waiting for salmon to jump.

The falls, so beautiful. When we first got there only a few bears had taken up residence. By the time we left there were about 10-12.

They remind me of really big dogs.

Mr. Grumpy Gus. I love all of their facial expressions.

Hopefully I'll be able to go back in the next couple of years. Later on in the season more bears flock to the falls and that's what I want photos of!

I'm Back!

Can't believe it's been more than 4 months since my last blog post! I was beginning to have serious withdrawals. Summer in Alaska was absolutely amazing. I had lots of long days, lots of hard work but met the best people who I now consider part of my extended family. I don't have nearly enough good things to say about the experience. And the scenery! Oh my stars! I've spent the past week decompressing and getting back into the swing of things. I wasn't acclimating too well at first :)

Hi! Remember me?

What started off as a simple 2 or 3 day blog "vacation" somehow morphed into an almost 2 month lapse. So very sorry.

A lot has been going on the past month: leaving work, traveling to Texas to see my dad and then turning right around and flying home to Massachusetts for a week to see friends and family there. I'm now back in Tennessee until I fly out yet again for Alaska.

I won't be updating this blog while I'm gone but if you'd like to follow along on my travel adventures, you can head over here.

Photo Dump Weekend

My tulips are up, open and oh so pretty!

Granted, there are only about 13 of them, but still.

I love these flowers. They're so fun to photograph.

I used the ToyCam & Polandroid filters on the FxCamera app for my Droid.

It was the first Saturday of the month and Goodwill has 50% off everything in the store! Score! I haven't taken any pics of my haul yet. Those will be up maybe Tuesday or Wednesday. I found lots of Gap, J. Crew and a few Banana Republic items and also scored 2 pieces of stamped silver that are in need of a good cleaning. 2 new purses and a wicker basket completed my purchase. And the best part... it only came to $48 and change. Yay

Mom decided to take Ali cause she goes everywhere with us. She sat in the truck and wasn't too happy about it. So we decided to take a ride down to Reelfoot Lake to let Ali run around. It was a gorgeous day, even though I wasn't properly attired to be wandering around outside. (silver ballet flats, anyone?) I'm posting more lake photos in my Flickr account.

At the lake they have a few large enclosures set up with 2 bald eagles in one and red tailed hawks in another. They also have smaller cages with owls in them, like the photo above.

All the turtles came up out of the lake and settled themselves on logs to catch some rays.

I love the green ToyCam filter. I've used it quite a bit for my photos.

Mom and I were on the fence if this was a beaver lodge or just a bunch of sticks and crap piled up.

This morning mom had to go into work to clean for a bit so I tagged along. Hooray for heavy machinery! I know it doesn't look that big but I could lay inside that bucket lengthwise, should I ever choose to. Which I won't.

I don't know why, but this totally cracked me up. The sign is outside of the bathroom. I can just picture a bunch of people forming a line when the tornado sirens go off.

I also watched a crap load of movies this weekend. You can see the updated list here. I'm taking tonight off so I'll have a lovely 3 day weekend.

A few posts back I talked about the fabric/button collection that was my Nana's. I had no idea what on earth I was going to do with that many buttons. But Design Sponge came to the rescue. *Thanks guys!*

I love earrings and all kinds of fun jewelery. I started out by making fabric button earrings using all kinds of yummy fabrics from old to new, classic to modern. My purpose is to make it fun, colorful, sweet and affordable to everyone. I want everyone to have something in their jewelery box that they can wear to match their everyday outfits. As time goes by I expanded my love of fabric covered buttons to include rings, pendants, brooches and hair accessories. Everyone can have a choice to pick something from each section to match or mix it up for a bit of uniqueness.

My second love is felt. I love the wonderful range of colors with felt fabrics from 100% wool, mix blend or even craft felt. Every piece of felt is a color masterpiece and begs to be turned into something pretty. With felt, I enjoy making little animals. The smaller, the cuter, the better! You can view my felt creations in my Etsy shop as magnets, bookmarks or even embellishments for your craft projects.

What is your favorite Etsy shop?

I have many favorite Etsy shops and it is hard to tell which is number 1 on my list. Instead I am going to give a special mention to this shop and seller on Etsy who has been a constant support and friend to me since I first started. This special person is Su and her shop is Alice Loves. Su makes the most gorgeous comfortable and easy-care clothes for toddlers and preschoolers using quality designer prints. Her daughter Alice is her model and test drives every piece of clothing. If it survives on Alice, you can be assured that you are getting something that is of good quality! Any advice to other crafters?

I still consider myself as a newbie as there is so much to learn whether on Etsy or elsewhere. I am not an expert in crafts or selling them but I love doing what I do. I wouldn't call this advice but more of sharing my experiences - do not do just for the sake of getting an income. Do it because you love it. Of course everyone wish they could quit their day job and craft full time (me included) but not many of us can afford to do it. It takes off the pressure and less stressful (financially) to you and your loved ones if you do not rely on your Etsy shop as main income UNTIL you are fully established with a steady stream of sales with minimal promotion. This is when you know your work has reached a wide audience and buyers come to you because they love your work and want to have a piece of it in their lives.

Memories of Nana

After Nana passed away last month, the family had the task of going through her things and deciding what to keep, donate or throw away. Nana had a large three drawer Rubbermaid cart in her dining room filled with fabric and fabric related items. At first it was suggested that no one wanted it and it should be donated. I said I would take a look through it to see what exactly was in there and I was pleasantly surprised at what I found. A lot of the stuff I left in there. The photos below are the items I snagged.

Buttons! Loads and loads of glorious buttons! Two storage containers and two glass containers full! Most of them still have thread on them and bits of fabric so I'll have to go through them and clean them off.

Pretty much every color and material one could think of, with a big emphasis on white.

I also snagged some pieces of vintage fabric. Seriously, I think some of this stuff is older than I am!

I love {LOVE!} this print above. I've been searching Etsy for some bag/wallet patterns. I think this would make a fab tote bag!

And perhaps a wallet out of this.

And some pillows from this.

Still deciding on this one.

Still doing some research on this Bulpitt's bag.

This fabric is actually a wrap around skirt that Nana had made. I clearly remember her wearing it with a white blouse and sandals when I was little.

I think this fabric would also make a cute pillow or clutch.

Black Bean Salsa

I'm not one for posting a bunch of recipes and I've been hanging onto this one cause I wanted it all for myself. Seriously. But I figured hey, everyone else should be able to taste how awesomely delicious this is. So I give you: Black Bean Salsa

Main Ingredients:

2 cans black beans {drained & rinsed}

2 cans corn {drained & rinsed}

2-3 Roma tomatoes {diced}

1 packet Good Seasons Italian dressing mix

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1/4 cup olive oil

1 tsp ground cumin

Drain & rinse black beans & corn. Set them aside in a glass mixing dish. I have a Pyrex bowl that comes with a lid. This is also what I use to serve it in. Chop up tomatoes and toss them in the bowl as well. In a measuring cup add vinegar & olive oil. Add the packet of dry dressing mix and ground cumin. Mix well. Pour this over the bean/corn/tomato mix. Stir everything together.

And now the hard part:

Store in the fridge for 3-4 hours for the flavors to mingle. Yes, you will want to eat this right away. Yes, I do it all the time. But trust me, wait. It's soooo much better. And if you can wait longer, yep, it gets even better.

The above is the very basic recipe and it's up to you to decide what you want to add to it. I'm not really big on tomatoes so sometimes I add less. Sometimes, not at all. For the most part, I always add extra cumin. I love the smoky flavor and kick it gives. I also add fresh chopped cilantro and finely chopped red onion. Really though, whatever you want to add to it is fine.

Here's some other options:

chopped olives

celery

jalapeños

green peppers

chili powder

cajun seasoning

I usually buy some Scoops tortilla chips but I've also used this salsa in salad, in a pita with grilled chicken and on burgers. It's very versatile.

Focus On... Emu Attacks {And A Giveaway!}

I was browsing through the Night Owls team on Etsy a few weeks ago and came across a very cute avatar {I'm a sucker for cute avatars} along with a pretty rad shop name; Emu Attacks. It made me laugh out loud {literally} because I once got chased by a rabid Emu at the Louisville Zoo. Ok, maybe the whole rabid part is up for interpretation. But he did chase me and I'm pretty sure he was in attack mode.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm originally from the D.C. area, but I came to Providence for art school and I stuck around after graduation. I love living in Providence! It has many of the things bigger cities have; lots of other artists, tasty places to eat and it's close to Boston. I went to school for illustration so I love drawing and creating narratives with my work. The things in my shop are really a combination of my interests ie: pattern, travel, food!

Where does your inspiration come from:

I'm very inspired by other things I like; books I'm reading, food I'm cooking, patterns and of course Japanese culture. I lived in Japan for 6 months and it had a huge impact on me and my art. I met amazing people, ate delicious food and saw beautiful things. Travel in general always invigorates me! I don't tend to have a lack of ideas, just a lack of time really.

Tell us a little about your creative process:

I am constantly drawing and I tend to work on a few projects at the same time. Whenever I get stumped on one I take a break and switch to something else. For the fabric patterns and stationary I've been making drawings in pen and ink and scanning them. Then I can play with the color palette and how I arrange all the shapes together. I had a friend show me how to place things into repeat on the computer and since then I've felt much more comfortable using the computer to color and finish work.

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?

I wanted a place to showcase my work on the internet. I'm interested in getting work as a textile/surface designer and this was sort of a chance to try that out and create stuff that I have complete artistic control over.

What is your favorite music/movie/tv show to craft to?

Haha! Awesome question! It depends on what I'm working on... I watched a lot of Top Chef when I made food patterns and watched some documenteries about NASA and the space program when working on my astronaut pattern. I love the Sookie Stackhouse books on audiobook! They are the right level of trashy fun to keep me entertained.

How does your craft stand out from the rest?

hmmmm...you tell me! I guess I just try to make patterns and images based off of things I'm passionate about. I hope that people see that when they look at my work. I try to create things I would want to buy and that are fun to make! I also try to consider how my items will be used so they can be well made. I know that there are a million tote bags floating around on Etsy so I try to create something unique; a reversible tote with a Japanese side and an American side so you can flip it depending on your mood!

I'm trying to do a better job about blogging since I think it is a great way to generate interest in your work and to connect with other artists doing amazing things!

In June, Jessica and her boyfriend Robin will be cycling 100 miles around Lake Tahoe to help raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They both hope to raise $4250 each. Scrapbook On The Road {MA - May 2011}

I'm going to be flying home for a few days in May before I head to Alaska for the summer. What a better time to test drive the whole Scrapbook on the Road thing. I threw this album together in about an hour today. For the covers I used two pieces of 6x8 chipboard that I covered with some patterned paper by American Craft {Metropolitan series} I used some of the brown 7Gypsies rings that I purchased for my other album and filled it with scraps I had laying around the studio.

A Project of Epic Proportion

First and foremost, I apologize for posting such crap pics on a Friday morning. Not exactly the way I'd like to send you off into the weekend. But, weather permitting, this is how I'm going to spend my weekend. Looks like fun eh? Yeah, I'm with you on that one.

When my parents originally looked at this house with the realtor, it was in the middle of winter and a very cold, windy day. They were told that there was a dried up creek bed that ran the length of the property in the back of the house. Nice. Uh, not so much. Mom and Bill didn't really check it out. I feel they were more interested in the house. And besides, you can't actually see the creek bed from anywhere on the property until you get right up to it. {It gets to about 10' deep at some points} I'm pretty sure at some point it had water running through it but the guy up the street decided to make his own pond so he dammed it up and cut off the water supply of everyone downstream. {Thanks, jerk.}

Apparently, the people who lived here before either didn't have trash service or just didn't care what they did with it because most of it, as you can see, ended up in the empty creek. Not a pretty picture. These photos are just from one {very small} section of the creek. This is also, in my opinion the worst part of it. So, last weekend Mom and I purchased some heavy duty contractor bags and I came up with a plan. I'd spend one hour every day picking up the crap that's down there until I leave for Alaska this summer. I have big goals.

So, after spending about 2 hours down there this morning, I've come to a few conclusions:

* These people drank. A LOT. Beer cans ran rampant. Also lots of glass bottles. Probably vodka but my guess is gin.

* They obviously didn't care about the environment.

* They used Suave hair products and liked Pringles.

* They're missing a set of false teeth. Seriously. Just sitting there smiling up at me.

* They like to hide boots in suitcases. Better than dead bodies I always say. {And I wouldn't be surprised if I find one, by the way. I'll keep you posted.}

*Also, they must have purchased a new computer monitor, cause the old one is in the photo below.

That big yellow thing is a ball that showed up a few weeks ago. I'm not exactly sure how it got there. Starbucks. When I travel to civilization to get some.

Nail polish! For some reason I don't usually keep polish on my nails in the winter. It seems to chip more. But since it's getting warmer {spring is right around the corner} I've been picking up pretty shades all over the place.

My new weapon of choice is the dual tip Vellum Writer by Kuretake. Just wish they came in different colors. {I've only been able to find it in black}

Ice cubes. No, not those. The ones from work. They're bunny poo shaped. Perfect for crunching on. {Yes, I know it's bad but I feel you have to pick your battles.}

Heels. I scored some sweet sweet Gianni Bini pumps from Dillards this past weekend {On sale, 70% off} I'll post some photos soon.

Scrapbook On The Road {Coming Together}

I love getting stuff in the mail. Especially when it's fun stuff like this! I was a little pleasantly surprised that the 7Gypsies book covers were actually black and not that reddish color in the shop pics. Now that I have it though, I'm not sure if I'm going to use it for the cover. Right now I just have two pieces of chipboard as place holders. They work well so I might just decorate them and use them instead.

These are the first few things I added to the book. I have a clear scroll overlay along with a red envelope underneath for ephemera. Under that is a large craft tag that I added some green ribbon to.

I added quite a few of these opaque velum envelopes. They're just a hair too big for the album but I have a feeling by the time this is completed I'll have bits and bobs stuck out all over the place (like the ribbon). So I'm okay with it.

I punched a few pieces of thin cardboard and added them throughout.

I purchased these Martha Stewart chipboard letters on clearance at Wal-mart. Every once in a while you can find some good crafty things there. I added these to the back of the cardboard. I'm still deciding if I'm going to paint over them or not.

I added a small note card. It's got a birdcage in the corner with the word 'fly' above it. Love this.

More various bits of scrap paper and cardstock I had laying around. I even used some packaging, which you can see on the left side. I plan on covering up the print with photos.

Another craft tags and a piece of brown textured cardstock.

More vellum envelopes. I bought some overlays from Michael's {Ill have to check on the brand and I'll take some photos for you} and I stuck one inside of each. They're all different designs and are all super cute.

I won this on eBay the other day. It's a 7Gypsies wire bound envelope book. I tend to collect a lot of crap while traveling and I honestly don't think all of it will fit in the album so this will be used for backup.

I'm super excited about this week's Focus On post. It's features the one and only SewZinski. One look through Sarah's shop and I was instantly in love. Tell us a little about yourself:

My name is Sarah. I'm an Iowa girl transplated to Florida, living and working in what I like to refer to as the craft cave in the Pineapple Compound. I designed furniture for a folk art furniture company for over 10 years, then decided to take my part time indie craft company, sewZinski, to full time and work for myself. I am a self taught embroidery artist and I love working with resourced materials. I've recently added hand painted ceramics as a new sewZinski line. I enjoy being able to bounce back and forth to different mediums. It keeps my brain fresh and designs ever changing and evolving.

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?

When I started making hand embroidered wallets locally in Des Moines years ago, I was doing 60% of my business with custom orders. I also had pieces that I created ready to sell but no real way of sharing my work without building my own website, which I didn't have the time, patience, or money to do. I also wanted to reach a larger audience that appreciates handmade over Walmart. Etsy was the perfect solution.

Tell us a little about your creative process:

I'm a pretty spontaneous person when it comes to design. I rarely draw out the images first on paper. I usually just dive right into drawing directly onto whatever medium I happen to be working with and see what happens from there.

Color is usually my first inspiration. It instantly triggers a memory, mood, or overall theme for the piece I'm doing. The rest just happens from there. I guess it's pretty organic, I'm not really a linear thinker.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I love history and anthropology, so I pull a lot of inspiration from different cultures and their story telling and heritage. Pop culture and nature play a big part in my designs as well.

How does your craft stand out from the rest?

I think the fact that I am self taught in the art of drawing and embroidery makes my work have it's own distinctive look. I like to embroidering flowers, or drawing ships, but they are my own made up versions of the real thing. I would never call my work realistic. It's my own crazy mind's version of a flower or ship. A more stylized version. Plus I really like color and I think it shows in my work.

How do you advertise your products?

The one thing I realized within the last couple of years is crafting for craft's sake is great, but if you want to sell your work you have to be active in social media.

Twitter's played a huge role in that for me. It's helped me make a personal connection with like minded people that also enjoy crafting and the arts, and it's also helped me spread the word about what I do for FREE, which is a bonus.

I've started using my Facebook page a little more, but because I'm a twitter addict, I tend to find more time intensive. I also have a blog, but again I need to find more time to post to it.

Etsy Stalker, Papernstitch, Holiday showcases online, Soopsee, Flickr, Cargoh and various other websites have helped me get the word out about what I do. Blog mentions are great too!

What is your favorite music/tv show/movie to craft to?

I love listening to podcasts while I work: Missed in History, This American Life, Doug Loves Movies, RadioLab, Hardcore History, Pod F.Tompkast, the Nerdist. I also enjoy a little pre-war Blues, and whatever station I'm in the mood for on Pandora..

Giving Back

One of my New Year's resolutions for 2011 was to start giving back. Volunteering, charity work, donations, what have you. Unfortunately, working 3rd shift and trying to get a business off the ground doesn't leave me with a whole lot of free time. In the past I have crafted an item and donated the proceeds to the AIDS Foundation and was planning on doing that again. After some thought, and a few pictures posted on Facebook, I decided on a different organization.

A few months ago my sister had posted some photos of her daughter Morgan on Facebook. They live on the other side of the country so I don't get to see the family that often. It sucks. {Just sayin'.} Back in 2009, Morgan was diagnosed with diabetes. I know it has been a tough struggle for her for the past couple years but she plows on full force and joins in activities just like any other kid. {And makes Auntie Jenny very proud!}

Morgan met up with Noah. Noah, with help from his parents started The Diabetes Dude, a non-profit organization to help raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes. Don't let Noah's age fool you. This guy gets around! Noah and the gang "flock" people with blue lawn flamingos. The flamingos travel all over the US and Noah even had the chance to meet Bret Michaels. Yep, THE Bret Michaels.

Bret was "flocked" with Darwin, one of the blue flamingos and ended up traveling with Bret while he was on tour. How cool is that?

Anyways, I had been kicking around the idea of creating a bar of soap in which the proceeds would benefit The Diabetes Dude and the ADA {American Diabetes Association} I sent Tracy, Noah's mom, an email explaining what I wanted to do and she was on board. She shipped me a bag of the blue flamingo silly bandz that were made specially for the company that makes Noah's pump. No one else has them! Jealous? I know you are :)

Sure, some of you may read this and think, "It's diabetes. It's just a few finger sticks and watching what they eat." And for those of you who say that, I say:

Noah asked a bunch of people to email him their diagnosis date and the number of sticks they've had for one year. It ended up something like this...

221 people = 667,470 finger sticks

{Need I say more?}

So, in a nutshell I've been a very busy bee the past 12 hours. Therefore, you should get your butt over to the shop and purchase a bar.

$2.00 from each bar sold will be donated to The Diabetes Dude and the ADA.

These sun-ripened raspberry square bars come in two layers. The bottom layer is made with goat's milk for that extra dose of skin softening love. Colors range from purple to light blue. The top is a clear glycerin layer with a blue flamingo silly band embedded inside. Only one way to get that band out, and that's to soap up! Perfect for kids and adults!

Calling All Soap Makers!

If you haven't heard already, Brambleberry is hosting another epic soap swap!!! I didn't participate in the first so I'm jumping on this opportunity. How do I take part in this awesomeness, you ask? Basically, it breaks down like this:

Check out the master list on Soap Queen. Email Brambleberry which scent you will be making. Whip up 12 bars of either CP or MP soap. {That's cold-process or melt & pour for you non-soapy people} Label them. Send them to Brambleberry by May 2nd. Around the end of April, head over to their website and purchase your swap pack. You are just paying for postage and not the actual soap. {This runs around $13, depending on where you live.} So, 12 bars of hand crafted soap for $13. How can you beat that?

I've decided to make my Lemon Poppy Verbena Kitchen bar as seen in the top photo. It smells so amazing, you really have no idea. I'm sneaking up to Massachusetts for a week before I take off for Alaska so I'll post photos of all of the soap I get from the swap. I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!

Scrapbook On The Road

Over the weekend I purchased the Scrapbook on The Road class from Ali Edwards. It was the best $14 I've ever invested. There's handouts, lists and detailed videos about how to construct your album. She also goes into detail about hunting and gathering ephemera from your trip, adding photos to your book and telling your story.

The first thing I did after reading everything and watching the videos was to go into my studio and sift through stuff to decide what kind of book I would like to create. I will be using this for my trip to Alaska this summer. I didn't want anything too bright and colorful so I'm sticking mostly with neutrals and the occasional pop of color.

I pulled some colored envelopes that I will end up punching and adding to the album. A lot of the supplies on the class list were sold out so I made do with what I had and ended up only ordering a few 7Gypsies items from Etsy. {You'll see these further down the post}

I also pulled some letter and quote stickers from my stash. I may or may not use these in my book but I'll probably take them along with me.

I love these little round travel chipboard stickers. I think I got them at Michaels a few years ago in their $1 bins.

More various bits that I pulled. Once again, I may or may not use them. I'll just wait to see what feel the album takes on and see if they will fit in with the general theme.

I love the tickets and that cute little bird! Those will more than likely get thrown in somewhere.

I ordered a set of 7Gypsies Elizabeth book covers. They measure 5.5"x7".

I also snagged some colored tape, also from 7Gypsies.

I found these 1 3/5" brown rings. I think these would work for a general vacation book but seeing as how I'll be away for 4 months, I may need to upgrade to larger rings.

I also purchased some 7Gypsies mini colored blank labels. Perfect for adding little notes, tags and observations.

Once I get my Etsy items in the mail, I'll punch everything and start working on my foundation pages.

Focus On... Moon Flower Creations

The first thing I do when I get home from work in the mornings is take off all of my jewelry and put it in the bowl. I am a homemakin' mother of 4. I love saying that.:)
I have been pretty crafty and artistic for almost as long as I can remember. I do remember really getting into drawing and making things when I was about 9 years old. I think that I realized then, that when I was creating, I was truly happy. I feel the same now. If I couldn't express myself though my art I would be totally and utterly depressed.

Well, my books seem pretty unique maybe? My felted bowls are cool, but I guess I don't really feel that my things stand out all that much from anybody else who makes similar things. I am pretty pleased with what i do though.:)

There is way too many that I like to say that but I will say that my favorite type of Etsy shop is the ones that have things made from things found from nature, kraft paper, recycled and handmade paper, linen material, burlap and jute twine, felt, glitter, vintage, french style, cottage style, earthy style, and so much more!:)

Any advice to other crafters?

For the one's just getting started or who feel like their stuff isn't selling fast enough, just keep trying to figure out ways to get noticed like joining teams and their discussions, twitter, learn better picture taking techniques, because having great pictures for your listings is so important. Don't give up on what you love to do. Keep tweeking whatever needs tweeking and through perseverence, success will come. At least that is what I like to think.;)
